Berwyn’s Best Seafood Title Goes to Lavergne’s Tavern for their Mexican Scallops

The Berwyn Development Corporation’s (BDC) Berwyn’s Best competition began in early June and was fixed on finding the best seafood. Eleven establishments with seafood on their regular menus competed to make it into the Top 5 of seafood-serving establishments. These five local haunts submitted their fan favorite seafood dishes for the second round of voting and now the vote is in! The winner is Lavergne’s Tavern for their Mexican Scallops: Chile-lime dusted seared scallops with corn esquites, queso fresco, micro cilantro and lime wedge.

Lavergne’s Tavern went up against other local favorites Autre Monde Café and Spirits, Capri Ristorante Due, El Nuevo Vallarta Sports Bar & Grill and Los Corrales Taqueria & Restaurant. The final competition brought together a group of local judges for a blind taste-test event hosted by the Concordia Little Lambs Preschool. The judges compared each serving of seafood side-by-side based on taste, presentation and texture.

The panel enjoyed the variety of seafood dishes, making the decision a difficult one. Judges included Angelica Ibarra, Owner of Ibarra Motors; Julisa Sanchez, CRA Area Manager for Wintrust Mortgage; Pablo Sarmiento, Owner of Diaz Case Realty Corp; Libby Popovic, Partner of Caputo & Popovic P.C.; Mario Manfredini, Battalion Chief of Fire Prevention; and Pastor Jim Huenink, Pastor of Concordia Little Lambs Preschool. Their scores along with a public poll determined the contest winner.

Owner Jerry Hernandez reacted to the award saying, “We are thrilled to add a third “Berwyn’s Best” title to our list at Lavergne’s Tavern—Cocktail, 2016; Egg Dish, 2017; and now Seafood, 2018! Our team works hard to invent cocktails and dishes that are not only delicious, but also creative and that people will love. Our Mexican Scallops are inspired by the “eloteros” that push their carts in the hot summer months in Chicago. It’s a lot of fun taking something people are familiar with and elevating it with ingredients that you may have never thought would pair well— in this case, a variation of elotes and fresh scallops.”
