The City of Berwyn honored a US Army disabled service member by donating a two bedroom condo to him and his family. Through a partnership with the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) and the City of Berwyn, a soldier and his family will finally have a permanent residence to call home.

On December 23, Mayor Robert J. Lovero and other officials handed over the keys to a furnished condo at 6645 W. 19th Street in Berwyn. “Too often this country sends our young men and women overseas to fight our wars and when they return home the necessary support network isn’t there. By providing permanent and stable housing, we can help alleviate the stress and pain of returning from war,” said Lovero.

With funding provided by IHDA the foreclosed condo unit was acquired by the City of Berwyn during the recession through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Working with the Veterans Administration, IHDA and the City of Berwyn were able to identify a qualified disabled service member in need.

In addition to organizing the entire opportunity, the Berwyn Holiday Fund raised donations to fully furnish the condominium. “When we put the word out to area businesses that we needed donations for a disabled veteran, the response was overwhelming. True to the Christmas spirit, these businesses embraced the power of giving back to those in need,” said Berwyn Holiday Fund co-founder and Korean Service veteran Frank Amaro. “We will never be able to fully thank our veterans for their service but we can certainly try.”

The forgivable mortgage for the condo will be underwritten by the Illinois Housing Development Authority. Along with income verification, there are additional assurances that the condo must be owner occupied for several years.

The Berwyn Holiday Fund is a network of civic minded Berwyn residents whose goal is to give back to the community during the holiday season. The Berwyn Holiday Fund delivers Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner to those in need and hosts sailors from Great Lakes Naval Base on Christmas Day.
