MACNEAL HOSPITAL CELEBRATES BECOMING A CATHOLIC HEALTH MINISTRY IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO
On September 7, MacNeal Hospital celebrated becoming a Catholic health ministry of the Archdiocese of Chicago at a ceremony attended by Auxiliary Bishop John Manz, Loyola Medicine and Trinity Health leaders, Illinois Representative Lisa Hernandez, Berwyn officials, community members and MacNeal colleagues.
M.E. Cleary, president of MacNeal, said “The hospital is privileged to have cared for those in need for nearly a century and is honored to have joined a health system that operates with a servant’s heart.”
MacNeal is now one of three hospitals in Loyola’s regional health system, which also includes Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park. With that affiliation, MacNeal also became a member of Trinity Health, one of the nation’s largest health systems with 94 hospitals in 22 states.
Sister Mary Ann Dillon, RSM, PhD, Trinity Health’s executive vice president for mission integration, welcomed MacNeal as a new ministry. Sr. Dillon praised MacNeal for demonstrating the core values of reverence, commitment to those who are poor, justice, stewardship and integrity.
“MacNeal, Loyola and Trinity Health are values-based organizations committed to providing holistic care and to creating healthy communities,” Sr. Dillon said. “As Catholic healthcare ministries, we are aligned in our intent and in our shared mission to be a compassionate and transforming healing presence in the communities we serve.”
During the unity ceremony, participants read prayers in English, Spanish, Polish and Arabic, lit the Trinity candle to a musical rendition of “How Great Thou Art,” and Michael S. Slubowski, president and COO of Trinity Health, shared a proclamation from Catholic Health Ministries acknowledging MacNeal Hospital’s transition.
The unity celebration follows the March 1, 2018 acquisition of MacNeal and its affiliated operations by Loyola Medicine and Trinity Health. MacNeal is a 374-bed community hospital with a 12-bed acute rehabilitation unit, a 25-bed inpatient skilled nursing facility and a 68-bed behavioral health program.
