Berwyn’s Best Pizza announced
The BDC’s second Berwyn’s Best competition began in January and was fixed on finding the best local slice of pizza. Paisans Pizzeria & Bar (6226 W Ogden Ave) walked home a winner with its signature supreme pizza. The dish starts with a thin crust covered in sweet tomato sauce and is filled with sausage, onions, mushrooms and green peppers. It is then topped with a shredded in-house blend of premium mozzarella cheeses and pepperoni. Pizza dough and sauce are made daily from scratch.
Paisans Pizzeria & Bar went up against other local favorites Waldo Cooney’s Pizza, Bubba’s Place, Benny’s Pizza and Nonno’s Pizza. The final competition brought together a group of local judges for a blind taste-test event to compare each specialty pizza slice side-by-side based on flavor, texture and presentation. The event took place at the Berwyn Park District’s Liberty Cultural Center where each pizza was served by unaffiliated attendants. The neutral location and service was to control for bias and focus solely on the pizzas themselves. Judges included Brendan O’Connor of Big Guys Sausage Stand, Brian Pabst of the City of Berwyn, Alma Ortiz of BMO Harris Bank, Jamie Kucera of Pav YMCA, John Aranza of Autre Monde Café & Spirits and Nancy Vesecky of Vesecky’s Bakery. Their scores along with a public poll determined the contest winner.
Owner Pete Fejzuloski reacted to the award, “I’m very excited to have won and thank the people that voted for us. Our whole crew tries its best and works very hard to make a great dining experience. We have a great menu of many dishes besides pizza too, and we’re happy to be here in Berwyn.”
