Berwyn Welcomes Its First Yoga Studio to the Depot District – Ahimsa Yoga Studio
Ahimsa Yoga Studio offers authentic yoga classes for all ages and levels
Ahimsa Yoga Studio, located at 3120 S. Oak Park Avenue, is Berwyn’s first yoga studio, offering classes for all ages and levels including Beginners, Vinyasa Flow, Hatha, Gentle/Restorative, Yin and a range of specialized workshops. Conveniently located in the Depot District, this is Ahimsa Yoga Studio’s second location. In partnership with the City of Berwyn and Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC), Ahimsa Yoga Studio held a grand opening celebration on September 16.
Ahimsa Yoga Studio’s emphasis is on teaching traditional alignment based yoga, which incorporates both mind and body wellness for overall health. They offer a variety of classes for all ages and levels – from beginner to the seasoned practitioner. Ahimsa is a sanskrit word that means “non-harming” and is the inspiration for the name of the studio. Partner Masin Ouksel explains, “Ahimsa is one of the principles of yoga. It means to live a life without causing harm, living your being while generating positivity and letting go of negative energy.”
Co-owner Kelly Merydith’s inspiration for Ahimsa began when she was first introduced to yoga during her senior year in college while taking classes at Back Bay Yoga Studio in Boston, MA. After discovering the healing and restorative power of yoga, she quickly knew this is where she wanted to be. Upon graduating from college in 2010, she completed a 200-hour YogaWorks teacher training and spent the next year working odd jobs and saving money to start Ahimsa. In May 2011, she opened her first Ahimsa Yoga Studio in Oak Park, IL. During this time, her father Chuck was similarly moved by yoga and together they completed the 500-hour teaching certification program at Moksha Yoga in Chicago. Her father currently manages and teaches at the Ahimsa Yoga Studio in Oak Park.
Four years later, along with her best friend Masin Ouksel, Merydith decided to open a location closer to home for their Oak Park studio members who lived in the Berwyn area. They wanted to share with Berwyn residents the benefits and transformational potential of yoga while providing a beautiful space and supportive environment. Staffed with some of the best yoga teachers in the area, the studio is open seven days a week and offers a variety of classes for all ages and levels – from beginners to flow. As Merydith states, “For Berwyn yogis new to yoga, we are a ‘no experience necessary’ yoga studio.” Whether you are looking for a physically challenging or relaxing class, Ahimsa Yoga Studio offers something for everyone.
Ouksel states, “Yoga for us is more than a business – it’s our way of giving back to the world. We are really excited to be here generating peaceful lives.”
Mal Montoya, BDC Board President, remarked “The BDC is proud to welcome Berwyn’s first yoga studio to the Depot District. Now all of Berwyn will have an opportunity to enjoy this great new wellness option.” Mayor Robert J. Lovero continued, “Congratulations. I understand you have been a successful business owner in another community and we look forward to your success at your new Berwyn location. Welcome to Berwyn!”
